A young woman was this morning raped, and her husband beaten when three armed bandits invaded their Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) home and attempted to kidnap the couple and their two-year-old son.

Luckily, the vehicle in which the suspects were being transported in broke down; forcing the men to abandon their plans.

Investigators confirmed that two of the alleged suspects have been arrested as they continue to hunt for the third perpetrator.

The incident happened a little after 02:30 hrs this morning.

The Guyana Standard was informed that the 34-year-old victim told investigators that he was asleep when someone hit him in the head with a gun and demanded cash and jewellery. He claimed that he handed over $12,000 and his wedding band.

Not satisfied with the loot, the three armed men reportedly started beating the victim while an accomplice raped his wife. The entire ordeal played out in front of the couple’s two-year-old son.

There are reports that the home invaders threatened to kill the child if he did not stop crying. In the end, the suspects, who arrived on foot, forced the family into their car and attempted to take them to a canal in the area.

However, the car reportedly broke down, forcing the men to ditch their getaway plan. The police said that the suspects left the victims in the car and escaped on foot.

This news agency has been told that when the men fled the scene, the victims walked to the nearest house in the area and called the police. They were then taken to the hospital where they were treated and sent away.

The suspects were arrested a short distance from where they left their victims in the Zeelugt area.
