A West Coast Demerara (WCD) family has been cast into turmoil and sadness, after two of their family members were struck down by a speeding mini-bus earlier today along the Den Amstel Public road.

According to reports reaching the Guyana Standard, the two young brothers were on a bicycle when the vehicle collided with them, casting the brothers into another bus that was coming in the opposite direction.

The accident happened around 11:20 hrs. The victims have been identified as 19-year-old Shalum Allen and his older brother, Sherman West, 28, of Lot 8-9 Fellowship, WCD.

The siblings were rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

According to information received, minibus BVV 8882 was proceeding east along the northern side of the road when it stopped to put off passengers. West was towing his brother on his bicycle. They were riding behind the bus.

The police said that as the siblings were about to pass the bus, the driver suddenly drove off, colliding with the left handle of the bicycle.

The Guyana Standard was told that the brothers were flung onto the opposite side of the road—resulting in another minibus, BVV 7042, which was proceeding west on the public road, crashing into the victims. They died on the spot. Both minibus drivers have been detained.
