The Region One (Barima/Waini) administration has reported an influx of persons from Venezuela, Guyana’s neighbour to the west, which continues to battle economic hardship. This state of affairs led Regional Chairman, Brentnol Ashley, to make an appeal on Facebook yesterday for donations in the form of clothing, food items, water, or mattresses.

The situation he said is being addressed by the Region’s Disaster Risk Management Committee. In photos shared on his Facebook page, the majority of the persons seen are children and women. He noted that donations can be made to the Office of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Mabaruma Compound.

Additional information can be obtained by calling 777- 5029.

A local team of officials is expected to visit Puerto Ordaz in Venezuela from July 12 to 16, 2018 to enable the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Citizenship to plan a more effective response to the situation.
