Contracts worth over $1.8 Billion (US$8.87Million) have been awarded for the construction of secondary schools at Good Hope, Region Four and Westminster, Region Three.
This recently was announced by Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, who noted that the projects are under the Ministry of Education’s 2018 Capital Programme. A contract costing $1 billion (US$4,795,595) has been awarded to R. Bassoo and Sons Contracting Services for the construction of the Westminster Secondary School; while Good Hope Secondary School will be built by BK International Incorporated for $857Million (US$4,082, 506).
Westminster Secondary School, on the West Bank of Demerara, is expected to be built to accommodate 1000 students, while the Good Hope Secondary school is expected to house 800 students. Earlier in the year, contracts were awarded for the construction of schools and a dormitory at Craig, Region Four, Waramadong and Kamarang, Upper Mazaruni in Region Seven.
The Craig Nursery School (including fence, gate and guard hut) will be built by Simcon Engineering Company at a cost of $30,366,424.00; while the Kamarang Primary School will be constructed at a cost of $29Million. The D.C. Caesar Fox Secondary Complex at Waramadong will be built for $26,327,850.00 by J’s General Store and Construction Company.
In June, a $170M modern Golden Grove Secondary School was completed and officially commissioned. The new complex which could accommodate 400 students is equipped with an elevator, Home Economics room, and a modernized Science laboratory. Additionally, in July, the Diamond #2 and Eastville Nursery Schools were officially commissioned at a cost of $22.1Million and $20Million respectively.
