Investigators in Berbice are hunting for an ex-convict after the body of an elderly woman was found in a heap of fire in the backyard of her Washington, West Coast Berbice (WCD) home late last night.

The victim has been identified as Bhagwandai Deonarine. Divisional Commander, Paul Langevine said investigators were unable to identify marks of violence on the woman’s remains due to the severity of the burns she sustained.

A post mortem examination is expected to reveal the woman’s cause of death.

The Guyana Standard has been informed that the woman’s caretaker went to her home last night but could not find her inside the property. However, upon venturing into the backyard, Deonarine’s body was found in a pool of fire.

Residents in the area were quick to pull the woman’s remain out of the heap and subsequently put out the blaze. While her body was severely damaged by the blaze, it was not burnt beyond recognition. The police believed that the woman was killed before her body was set on fire.

According to information received, ranks are hunting for a serial robber, who was recently released from prison. Reports are that the man broke into the woman’s home about two months ago and stole a number of items. That matter is before the court.

The investigation is ongoing.
