A North East La Penitence woman who allegedly threw pepper sauce in her neighbour’s face after she repaid $2,000 of a $10,000 loan was today charged and released on $150,000 bail.

Colleen Sage, 25, of North East La Penitence, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that, on May 19, 2019 at 300 North East La Penitence, she unlawfully and maliciously threw a corrosive substance on Cecil Moore with the intent to maim, disfigure, disable, or cause grievous bodily harm.

She appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that the victim and Sage are neighbours and are therefore known to each other. The court heard that on the day in question Moore went to Sage’s shop, which is located at the front of her yard. The man reportedly asked Sage for $10,000 that was owed to him. The prosecutor told the court that the woman handed over $2,000 and Moore him that she had no more money.

The victim and Sage then began to argue and the man walked away and went to his yard. Shorty after, Sage went into her shop, picked up a bottle of pepper sauce, and went over to the victim’s home where she threw the substance in his face.

The matter was reported, an investigation was carried out, and Sage was arrested.

However, Sage’s lawyer Adrian Thompson, in a successful bail application, told the court that his client is the sole breadwinner for her family and that she was attacked by Moore.

The victim, who was also present in court, said that he is unable to see clearly. The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to Sage on the grounds of the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.

After listening to both sides, Magistrate McGusty released Sage on $150,000 bail. The conditions of the bail are that she lodges her passport with the court and desist from making contact with the victim.

Sage was also instructed to report every Friday at the East Ruimveldt Police Station until the hearing and determination of the trial. The mother of two will make her next court appearance on June 19, 2019.
