Joel Simpson, head of the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), was beaten this morning by a group of six men at a food stall at Bourda Market.

The attack which has left Simpson seeking medical attention for injuries he sustained to his rib and abdomen, happened sometime around 04:00 hrs. Up to press time, no one was arrested for the brutal attack on the gay rights activist.

The Guyana Standard has been informed that Simpson left an entertainment spot on the East Coast Demerara (ECD) and went to get food at the market when he saw the group of men he had seen earlier at a nightclub on Main Street, Georgetown.

Based on information related to the police, the attackers had thrown an alcoholic beverage on Simpson and his friends at the Georgetown nightclub, causing them to report the incident to management.

Simpson and his friend subsequently left and went to the ECD entertainment spot after they got no justice from the individual in charge of the club where they were bullied.

In a social media post, the Gay Rights Activist said when he saw the men at the food stall, he ignored them and proceeded to order his food. While ordering, he said that the gang attacked him, forcing the sellers nearby to intervene.

Prior to seeing the men at the club, Simpson said that he does not know the men and never said anything to them.

Anyone who may have information about the identities and whereabouts of the attackers are asked to contact the police
