George Robin, a 66-year-old pensioner, was this morning sentenced to 19 years in prison for raping a 16-year-old girl in February 2017.

About two weeks ago, a jury unanimously found him guilty of the crime.

Following the presentation of a probation report this morning, Justice Brassington Reynolds imposed the custodial sentence at the High Court in Demerara.

A probation report revealed that residents in the community where Robin lived said he would engage himself in vulgar sexual conversations with young girls.

During a plea in mitigation, lawyer Maxwell McKay asked the court to be lenient with his client considering his age. The lawyer also asked the Court to consider that his client has no previous brushes with the law.

Robin, a now convicted rapist, has maintained his innocence. He had previously told the court that whatever happens in front of man can be only be judged by God.

Robin is a father of 12 and was previously enlisted in the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force.

Prosecutors Lisa Cave and Seeta Bishundial presented the case for the State.
