Days after a pregnant woman threw dirty water on several supporters of the Peoples’ Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), she was this morning charged for the offence.

Twenty-four-year-old Cassandra Amsterdam, a cosmetologist of 48 Barrack and High Streets, Kingston, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts. The woman pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge which stated that on July 19, 2019, at Barrack and High Streets, Kingston, Georgetown, she assaulted Yanalla Dalrymple.

Facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Adduni Inniss stated that on the day in question, Dalrymple was carrying out a peaceful protest on behalf of the PPP/C. The court heard that Amsterdam, upon hearing the noise, exited her house and shouted “ Y’all don’t mek noise infront my house.” She then armed herself with a bucket containing dirty water and threw it on several persons.

However, Amsterdam, in addressing the court, stated, “My child was asleep and they were making a set of unnecessary noise infront my house. I threw a cup of clean water at the protestors but it ain’t catch nobody but I do apologise for my actions.”

The Magistrate, after listening to both sides, entered a not guilty plea on the woman’s behalf. With no objections raised by the prosecutor, the woman was released on $5000 bail. The mother of one is expected to make her next court appearance on July 29.

According to reports, the placard-bearing protestors were in the vicinity of Barrack and High Streets, Kingston, Georgetown, when the pregnant woman hurled a bucket of dirty water, thereby drenching both demonstrators and police officials.PPP supporters, being led by party leader Bharrat Jagdeo, were at the time protesting the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM)’s intention to initiate house-to-house registration in preparation for general and regional elections.
