A 20-year-old fisherman, whom the court heard raped a Venezuelan woman after entering her home while she slept, was moments ago remanded to prison.

Jamol Bunbury of the North West District appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on August 3 he engaged in sexual penetration with a woman without her consent.

The matter was heard in-camera and members of the public were asked to exit the courtroom.

According to information, the woman, who is 26-years-old, was at a party with her cousin. Bunbury was also at the said party.

It was reported that after the party, the woman and her cousin went home where they proceeded to head to bed.

Shortly after, the Venezuelan woman was awoken when she felt someone holding her hands and shining a light into her face.

The man then forced himself onto the woman before taking her clothes off. Bunbury then had anal and vaginal sex with the woman before making good his escape.

The matter was then reported, an investigation was carried out, and Bunbury was charged.

The Chief Magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Bunbury to prison. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on August 20 at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
