A 33-year-old Kitty, Georgetown mechanic was killed in an accident early this morning at Pearl, East Bank Demerara (EBD).  The Guyana Standard understands that his pillion rider sustained several injuries.

The accident happened just after 12:45 hrs.

Dead is Devon Hopkinson called “Wild Buck” of Railway Line, Kitty. He took his last breath at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. The police did not identify the pillion rider but said that he was treated and discharged from the hospital.

The driver of the motor lorry has since been arrested. A breathalyzer test revealed that his alcohol level was above the legal limit.

According to information received, both the motor lorry and the mechanic were heading north along the western carriageway of the East Bank Demerara (EBD) Public Road when the accident happened.

Based on reports reaching the police’s traffic department, the lorry driver slowed down on the public road just as he was preparing to turn into a lumber yard on the opposite side of the road when the motorcyclist attempted to overtake.

This resulted in a collision between the mechanic and the lorry. The motorcyclist crashed into the front of the lorry. It is unclear if the lorry driver turned on his trafficator to indicate that he was turning.

The police said that they were not able to determine whether the deceased was under the influence at the time of the accident but reports are that he was heading home. Following the collision, he was taken to the hospital where he succumbed.

An investigation is ongoing.
