Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 39-year-old Betsy Ground, East Canje Berbice man, whose body was discovered in the backseat of a car that was submerged in the Demerara River. The discovery was made this morning.

The deceased has been identified as Umdut Jagnit of Betsy Ground. His body was discovered around 04:30 hrs.

While it appears as though the car ran off the wharf at Timehri, East Bank Demerara—the fact that the deceased’s body was found in the back seat of his Toyota 192 motorcar with the driver’s side seat belt wrapped around his foot is puzzling investigators.

There were no marks of violence on the body and the security guard at the wharf told investigators that he did not hear any strange noise.

Based on information received, the security guard called and informed the police that a car was found submerged in the Demerara River. He related that a number of persons at the wharf alerted him to the floating car.

Police ranks, upon investigating, found the remains of Jagnit. No one reported seeing how the car reached into the water.

Ranks will check surveillance cameras around the area in an effort to solve this case.
