A 31-year-old Republic Bank employee lost his life this morning when he overtook a car on the East Coast Demerara (ECD) line top, in the vicinity of Felicity, and crashed into a bridge on the southern side of the road.
VEHICLE DRIVEN BY DAVID HEADLY

The accident happened around 05:00 hrs this morning.

Dead is David Headly of Lot 370 Powise Close, South Ruimveldt Gardens. He was headed to Georgetown when he crashed and died at the scene.

According to information received, Headly was driving west along the road when he overtook a car that was driving in the same direction.

Soon after overtaking the car, Headly drove into the bridge. The driver for the vehicle which the deceased overtook, came out and tried to assist but it was already too late to do anything.

It is suspected that Headly was under the influence of alcohol since traffic ranks who responded to the scene said that when they helped to lift his body, they smelled alcohol on him.

A bottle of alcohol was also found in the back seat of his vehicle. From the damage on the car, it appears that Headly was speeding.

Only recently, Traffic Chief, Linden Isles said that driving under the influence and speeding continue to be the leading causes of fatal accidents on the roadways.

Guyana Standard was told that for this year so far, 90 percent of fatal accidents were caused by both drunk and speeding drivers.

Isles urged that drivers, who feel the need to consume alcohol, to get someone to take them home or take a taxi rather than risking their lives and that of other road users.
