A police corporal was forced to shoot an Essequibo resident, who tried to attack ranks with broken bottles, a knife and cutlass at the Charity Community Centre around 00:36 hr this morning.

The injured man has been identified as Royston Evans called “Fine Crime” of Charity Squatting Area.

He was shot to the leg and is currently hospitalized at the Suddie Public Hospital in a stable condition.

According to information received, there was a car and bike show at the community centre last night where Evans was said to be behaving in a disorderly manner while smoking weed.

The police were called and when ranks proceeded to search him, he refused and began attacking the lawmen.

The suspect then picked up a bottle, broke it and threatened to injure anyone who approached him.

Guyana Standard has been told that even as the police made repeated efforts to apprehend the suspect, he continued to threaten ranks while running around the ground.

At one time, he is said to have rushed up to a rank with a cutlass which was lying nearby.

After numerous failed attempts to arrest Evans, a police corporal was forced to shoot him to the foot to prevent him from running around the centre ground where he was picking up bottles and pelting ranks.

 An investigation is ongoing.
