A carpenter, who the court heard dealt a detective constable a cuff to his mouth causing him to lose three teeth, was charged earlier today for the offence.

Twenty-two-year-old Shem Wilkie of 111 Miles Mahdia, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Wilkie denied the charge which stated that on January 11, 2020 at 111 Miles Mahdia, Essequibo Magisterial District, he inflicted grievous bodily harm on Mohamed Kadeer, a police officer.

Wilkie was represented by attorney-at-law Ronald Daniels who asked that his client be released on bail.

Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on the day in question, at around 02:15 hrs Kadeer and a party of policemen were on patrol duty at a night club. The court heard the defendant and his brother were outside behaving in a disorderly manner. Kadeer then asked the defendant and his brother to desist but they failed to do so. The court heard Kadeer then attempted to arrest the defendant’s brother and it was then that Wilkie dealt the officer a cuff to mouth causing three teeth to fall out his
mouth.

The defendant and his bother then made good their escape and it was only recently that Wilkie was arrested and charged for the offence. The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.

However, the Magistrate after listening to both sides, released Wilkie on $70,000 bail. Condition of the bail is that he report every Monday to the Mahdia Police Station until the hearing and determination of the trial. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on February 7.
