Region Three Commander, Simon McBean, has confirmed that a pandit is currently the centre of a probe, after a 13-year-old girl alleged that he made sexual advances, touched her inappropriately and then threatened to harm her family if she complained.

The incident happened in an East Bank Essequibo (EBE) community late last year and continued this year.

The suspect, who is a candidate for the People ‘s Progressive Party, has been released from custody on $150,000 station bail on Friday and his victim committed suicide the following day.

Police ranks are now trying to determine whether the pandit made contact with the child—resulting in her taking her own life.

The Commander said that his ranks will be questioning the pandit into the suicide of the child and a report will be prepared to send to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice.

Guyana Standard has been informed that the pandit is a family friend of the child’s parents and he would frequent their home. Late last year, he allegedly began touching the child inappropriately and having obscene conversations with her.

It was only last week the child reported what was happening to her parents, who then made a police report and the pandit was arrested. He denied the allegation and was placed on bail.
