The police are investigating the murder of a 26-year-old miner, who was stabbed with a pair of scissors by the very man he was trying to attack on Sunday, last at 14 Miles, North West District.

The deceased has been identified as Joseph Calistro of Port Kaituma, North West District. He sustained a stabbed wound to the middle of the chest and another to the right arm.

Calistro died at the Arakaka Health Centre, a day after he was wounded. The suspect is a 25-year-old miner and he has since been arrested.

Guyana Standard has been informed that the victim and the suspect were imbibing at a shop when the victim reportedly became intoxicated and wanted to fight with the suspect.

According to the police, the suspect tried to avoid him and walked away but the intoxicated Calistro, who was armed with a pair of scissors, followed and attacked him and attempted to stab him with his weapon.

The suspect told the police that he got upset and wrestled the victim to the ground and managed to disarm him. At this point, the victim still continued to attack the suspect, resulting in the suspect stabbing him with the scissors.

After Calistro was stabbed, he went home. The following day he went to the health centre in the village and was treated and sent away. He however returned a few hours later, complaining about chest pain.

While receiving oxygen, he died. The body is currently at the Post Kaituma Hospital Mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem examination.
