Yesterday the General Secretary of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Sherwin Benjamin, acting on behalf of the A PartnershipforNationalUnity (APNU), dispatched a letter to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, urging the government to give public servants a fair, sustainable wage increase of at least 25%.
In this missive, the party argued that public servants “are not asking for charity” but “a fair share of a national windfall that belongs to all Guyanese.”
“All Guyanese agree that most Guyanese, including public servants, are living from paycheck to paycheck and are living in poverty. It is in this context that A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) calls on the PPP Government to deliver a public servant wage increase before Christmas of not less than 25%, retroactive to January 2026,” the party noted.
The party noted that public servants should be able to face the future with greater security about feeding their families and meeting their bills.
“This is a necessity when the base monthly wage is only $102,346. The estimated wage increase is US$302 million based on the 2025 cost of US$1.21 billion.”
The APNU said that the total revenue available is US$4 billion as of May this year, with the NRF ballooning to approximately US$6.35 billion in 2028 and US$7.93 billion in 2029.
These sums, APNU said, indicate that Guyana can “sustainably pay” its public servants better.
It further noted that the Government’s own Mid-Year Report strengthens the case for the wage increase, citing Petroleum revenue deposits for 2026 are projected at approximately US$6.5 billion, 136.8% above the original budget projection.
“That is an expanded national resource base from which workers and all citizens must benefit. The government must use the increased income to improve the lives of the people of Guyana. Let us put people first,” APNU said.
