Four Sri Lankans who told the court they came to Guyana on a boat from Suriname as tourists and wanted to see the country, were today charged and fined for illegal entry.

Those charged are Anthony Jeyaraj; Thambirasa Nira Jan; Siriran Jans Senthusaan and Sebamlall Dias.

They pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that between January 18, 2020 and February 22, 2020, at Springlands, they entered Guyana by sea and disembarked without the consent of an immigration officer.

They appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. Facts presented by the court prosecutor stated that on the day in question, the defendants were in a route 94 minibus heading to Lethem when the bus was stopped by ranks at the Police Outpost. The court heard while at the outpost, the defendants were asked to produce their travel documents and it was discovered that no entry stamps were in their passports. Hence, they were arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters.

The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, fined the men $40,000 each or in default eight weeks in prison.
