ExxonMobil’s subsidiary, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL), has submitted to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the project details for its Hammerhead Development Project. This venture which stands as the fourth project EEPGL is pursing on the block could bring approximately 5.2 million of barrels of oil per month.

According to project details examined by the Guyana Standard, Hammerhead is located just 160 kilometers off Guyana’s coast and would use a Floating Production Storage and Offloading Vessel (FPSO) with a capacity for 1.6 million to 2 million barrels of oil. Considering this, Hammerhead operations will be able to iffload oil to conventional tankers approximately every seven to eight days.

The FPSO for Hammerhead is almost as big as the storage capacity for the Liza Unity FPSO which is still under construction. That FPSO will be utilized in the Liza Phase Two Project.

Furthermore, the Hammerhead Project will have a production capacity of 150, 000 to 190,000 barrels of oil per day. During the early stage of production operations, the project is anticipated to produce an average of approximately 4.5million to 5.2million barrels of oil per month.

The Guyana Standard understands that the Hammerhead project is expected to last for 20 years. The operator is hopeful of receiving all the required regulatory approvals for the project by mid-2024.

In keeping with the Environmental Protection Act, Cap. 20:05, Laws of Guyana, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is required for this offshore Petroleum Development Project before any decision to approve or reject it is taken. The EPA is therefore inviting members of the public to submit any queries or comments they may have about the project within the next three weeks.

EEPGL is pursuing this fourth project even as it is awaits approval for its third called Payara which is projected to produce around 220,000 barrels of oil per day.
