Using a model designed by the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO), the projected number of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in Guyana can reach 1,400 says Public Health Minister, Volda Lawrence.

“As it pertains to regional capacity, we have used the PAHO model to determine the number of projected cases for Guyana, which stands at 1,400,” she told media operatives today.

She said that the ministry is ready for such an eventuality as she outlined quarantine, isolation and intensive care measures that will be put in place.

“We will be preparing for 100 persons requiring ICU (Intensive Care Unit), 300 isolation beds across the country, and capacity for 730 beds for institutional quarantine,” the minister noted.

Guyana currently has eight confirmed cases with one inconclusive, and one death.

Providing a regional breakdown of confirmed cases, one is from Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara); six from Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica); and one from (East Berbice/Corentyne), one.

This number of cases further disaggregated as follow: one child, seven adults under 60 years of age and one adult over 60 years of age.

Of the total confirmed cases, the number of imported is four, with local transmission being five.

The total number of persons who have been tested has moved from 44 to 46 with eight positive, 37 negative and one inconclusive.

The number of persons in institutional quarantine is now 36. Of the seven persons in isolation, two are hospitalized in the COVID-19 ICUs.

Futher, in order to curtail the spread of the disease, the ministry will be strengthening community and hospital surveillance as well as the Rapid Response Surveillance Team.

As of yesterday, calls to the COVID-19 hotline moved from 856 calls to 998. These calls were received from seven of the 10 Administrative Regions. No calls were recorded from Regions: One, Two and 9.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases in 210 countries and territories, stands at 634,835 with 29,957 deaths.

In the region of the Americas, the total number of confirmed cases has increased from 100,314 120,798 with the number of deaths moving from 1,485 to 1,973 in 51 of the 55 countries, the minister reported
