The mother of Suraj Veersammy, the man who allegedly murdered his reputed wife and put her body in a barrel before discarding it in a trench at Belvedere, Corentyne, says he should spend the rest of his life in jail.

The deceased has only been identified as a 25-year-old Venezuelan woman who goes by the name “Vanessa.”

In a telephone interview, Sattie Veersammy said that her son spent most of his adult life in jail and it was only last November he was released from prison. Shortly after his released, he met with the deceased and they started a relationship.

The older Veersammy explained that because her son is a drug addict and steals, she stayed away from him and did not allow him to enter her home because he stole items in the past and has even threatened to kill her.

She said that when her son met the deceased, he took the woman to her home and introduced her. “They asked me to stay and say they didn’t have anywhere to go but I didnt want he stay with me so I tell them look for an apartment and I gone help pay.”

This news agency was told that the couple subsequently found a place at Belvedere and moved in. During their stay there, neighbours reported to the police that the couple fought a lot—almost daily. However, Veersammy said that the young woman never complained to her.

“If you na talk to she, she don’t talk to you so we don’t know a lot about her only that she came from Venezuela and she grow up in an orphanage. That girl was so nice and he should pay for what he did. He should spend the rest of her life in jail,” the woman said.

The woman said that if the deceased had confided in her about being assaulted by her son, she would have encouraged her to leave him.

Last Saturday, an unbearable stench led a neighbour to the woman’s body packed in a barrel in the trench opposite his home. The barrel had to be cut to remove her remains, which were covered in black and blue marks.

The suspect was arrested the following day hiding under the Canje bridge. He has since denied murdering the woman.
