Colleagues, there are unconfirmed rumors that school will be opened in June 2020. I wish to point out that the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has not participated in any discussion that led to such a decision.

We are aware that Guyana continues to record positive Coronavirus cases. In fact, over 20 cases were recorded in the last couple of days. Your union is aware of the health risk a June 2020 reopening of school will post to teachers, learners, and families, we, therefore, do not concur with such thoughtless rumor circulating on social media.

Further, we have stated our position on the
Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) proposed July 2020 examination. Our letter sent to the Ministry of Education (MOE) will be uploaded on this page. To date, we have not gotten a response from MoE on Guyana’s position put forward at the May 6, 2020 CXC meeting.

I remind you that teachers’ safety is paramount during this pandemic. Kindly resist any call to go out during this time. Stay safe and let us band together so that when this is over we will continue our work as educators and nation builders.
Mr.Mark Lyte
President, GTU
