A Lance Corporal attached to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), who was seen on camera assaulting a police officer, was today charged for the offence.

Twenty-five-year-old, Kester Bowen of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, this morning appeared at the Wales Magistrate’s Court before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty.

It is alleged that on October 9, 2020, at the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, he assaulted traffic officer Constable 24030 Wilson, who was executing his duty.

It is also alleged that Bowen obstructed Constable 24030 Wilson from carrying out his duty. The GDF rank pleaded not guilty to both charges and was granted $10,000 bail on each charge.

He is expected to make his next court appearance on November 4, 2020, for disclosure.

Bowen was charged on October 12, last, for driving an uninsured motor vehicle; driving an uncertified motor vehicle, and prohibition of tinted glass. He pleaded guilty to all the charges and was fined a total of $42,500.

Last Friday, Bowen was captured on camera assaulting traffic officer Constable 24030 Wilson just around 20:00hrs at the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

It was reported that Wilson was conducting Anti-Crime Patrol duties – directing the east bound traffic, which had two lanes that merged into one on the Meer-Zorgen Public Road. While doing so, he observed a dark grey motor car trying to change lanes and, in the process, caused congestion of traffic.

As a result, Wilson approached the driver of the said motorcar and told him of the offense committed and instructed him to pull to the corner of the said road.
The driver of the car, GDF Lance Corporal Bowen, after being instructed by Constable Wilson, allegedly became annoyed, exited the said vehicle, and chucked the rank. Constable Wilson then warned the driver about his behavior and asked him to desist.

The GDF rank allegedly ignored all warnings and proceeded to further assault the Constable by choking him and throwing several cuffs about his face and body, causing him to receive injuries. Constable Wilson was then assisted by other ranks who managed to arrest Bowen and take him into custody.
