A 6-year-old girl is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after being found in an unconscious state in a swampy area near her Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice home.

The child lives with her 25-year-old mother and her grandparents, who live in separate houses.

Police said that the child’s mother and father separated for some time now, but the father was given visitation rights to spend time with the child every Sunday.

Yesterday, at about 08:00hrs, the child’s father contacted the mother and made arrangements to collect her, police said.

According to the mother, she prepared the child and left her in the yard playing.

At the time, the child’s grandmother was at her home doing house chores and last saw the child about 11:30hrs. However, at about 12:30hrs, when the grandfather made checks for the child, he did not find her.

As a result, a search party was immediately formed by relatives and friends who combed the entire area. At about 14:00hrs, the child’s grandfather found her submerged in a swampy area, about five hundred feet away from the house, covered in mud.

She was subsequently picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was seen and examined by a Doctor on duty who admitted her as a patient.

She was later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where she is presently admitted and is undergoing treatment. Her condition is listed as stable as investigations are ongoing.
