A labourer was yesterday sentenced to 36 months in jail after he confessed to having illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

20-year-old Jonathan McKenzie of Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown was hauled before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

He pleaded guilty to the charges which stated that on January 10, 2021, at Lot 102 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, he had one .32 Taurus pistol and four live .32 rounds of ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence at the time.

The court heard that on the day in question, Police acting on information received of threats, went to the location where they observed McKenzie running into an apartment.

The Police gave chase and caught up with him where a search was conducted on him and the apartment he ran into. No one else was present in the building at the time.

During the search of the apartment, the illegal firearm and ammunition were discovered and McKenzie accepted ownership.
