Marco Seudatt, 22, of Fourth Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara, this morning appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court. He was not required to plead to the capital offence.

Particulars of the charge allege that on February 22, 2020, at Enmore, ECD, he murdered 72-year-old Mathura Etwaru, a pensioner.

Magistrate Azore remanded Seudatt to prison and the matter was adjourned until May 18,2021.

The Guyana Police Force had previously reported that the body of Etwaru was found by Gopaul Seralall, a 52-year-old painter of Hope, East Coast Demerara.

According to the statement, at about 8.16am, Seralall discovered the body lying on the ground at the northern side of a supermarket building.

The police, after reviewing footage from CCTV cameras installed at the supermarket and nearby buildings, discovered that at approximately 2.46am, Etwaru and another man were having an argument. The footage further showed the man holding onto Etwaru before pushing him to the northern side of the fence.

The assailant was also seen picking up empty cardboard boxes as he headed to the same area where he had earlier pushed Etwaru. At about 3:12am he lit the cardboard boxes and subsequently rode away in a western direction.

A post-mortem examination conducted on the remains of Etwaru revealed his cause of death as severe burns about the body and compression of the neck.
