Former President under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo’s performance during his first years in government pales in comparison to that of the previous Head of State, David Granger. At least, this is according to A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC)’s Member of Parliament (MP), Roysdale Forde S.C., during his presentation to the House this afternoon.

“Mr. Speaker, let us examine the management of the economy under the first five years of the Jagdeo Presidency. Let us examine the poor handling of the economy in his first five years as elected President and compare that to the performance of the economy in the five years of the A Partnership For National Unity + Alliance For Change. You will recall Mr. Speaker, that the Honourable Member Jagdeo, appointed in1999, had two years to practice as President before he was elected in 2001. Despite having two years to practice as President before being elected and having served as Finance Minister before that, he could not deliver credible economic performance.” He said.

In contrast to that, Forde said that the Granger Administration grew the economy three times faster than the Jagdeo Administration.

He noted that in 2001, under the Jagdeo administration, the growth rate was recorded at 1.9%; in 2002, it was 1.1%, in 2003, -0.6%; and in 2004, it was 1.6%.

Meanwhile, he posited that in 2015, during the Granger administration, the growth rate was 3.2%; 3.3% in 2016; 2.1% in 2017; and 4.1% in 2018.
