A 27-year-old businessman has confessed to staging the theft of his vehicle to obtain insurance money, police say.

The man reported to police that his Volkswagen motor vehicle, PYY 7703, along with several other documents and cash was stolen two days ago, at Alexander Street, Kitty Georgetown.

On Thursday he was interviewed by detectives at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), where he confessed that the incident was staged by himself and a friend.

The 27-year-old claimed that he staged the incident because he was frustrated after he was involved in an accident with the vehicle and the insurance company refused to pay him for the damages. He also told investigators that the plan was to destroy the vehicle to get the insurance benefit.

The vehicle was recovered yesterday abandoned at Ogle, East Coast Demerara.
