The body of 52-year-old Jamieson De Abreu called ‘Major’ was found floating in the Berbice River in the vicinity of Maria Henrietta yesterday.

De Abreu was last seen alive by his cousin at a shop on Monday, around 06:15hrs.

The relative told investigators that his cousin went to purchase cigarettes at a shop and later left with a dilapidated wooden boat paddling down the Berbice River, which he operated from the bow.

Some time after, the boat was observed floating along the said Berbice River by residents of the area. An alarm was made and residents of Maria Henrietta launched a search for the man but to no avail.

Yesterday about 08:00hrs, his body was seen floating in the Berbice River facing downwards.

The body was examined and the face and upper parts of the body appeared to be “mutilated from suspected fishes bites”, the Guyana Police Force said.

The body was escorted to the Kwakwani Hospital Complex and it was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled.
