Solomon Sookram, 33, of Lot 6 Montrose Railway Embankment East Coast Demerara (ECD) allegedly drowned yesterday at Felicity, ECD.

Enquiries disclosed that Sookram normally cuts grass for his father’s cattle at the back of Felicity ECD and would often consume alcohol before doing so.

Police said that around 14:30hrs, Sookram went to the said location allegedly inebriated and took off his clothing, and swam across the canal to cut grass. He began showing the children in a yard how to swim and he plunged and went under and did not resurface for about five minutes.

A neighbour raised an alarm and the deceased’s family went to the canal in search of him. His body was retrieved. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The Police were summoned and the body was examined for marks of violence but none was seen. He was pronounced dead by EMT on scene.

The body was later escorted to the Memorial Funeral Home.
