Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha along with members of the Hinterland Environmentally Sustainable Agricultural Development (HESAD) Project which falls under the Agriculture Sector Development Unit (ASDU) signed $70M worth of contracts to boost development in several Region 9 villages.

These projects will be implemented by the leaders of the respective communities as well as assigned producer groups over the next four months. The funding which falls under the HESAD Project is provided by the Government of Guyana and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) with implementation in Regions 1 and 9.

Investments through these projects will see funding of public goods such as village offices, rehabilitation, and construction of bridges, access roads, community centers etc.

Additionally, business projects to be engaged by the producer groups and villages are in areas focussing on production such as cattle and ranch improvement, poultry production, guest houses, crop production etc.

Guyana Standard understands that these types of investments are intended to build the village economy while ensuring food security.

Villages which signed contracts included Karasabai, Kokshebai, Tiger Pond, Pai Pang, Taushida, Tipiru, Rukumuta, Yurong Paru of the South Pakaraimas, Fairview in the North Rupununi and Shea in Deep South Rupununi.
