A vehicular accident on the Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Public Road yesterday has left one dead, police say.

The incident occurred at about 18:55hrs and involved a motorcar, PVV 854, driven by 43-year-old Wavell Lamatt of lot 75 Beterverwagting, ECD; motorcycle, CL 4502, owned and driven by 31-year-old Leon Lewis of lot 175 Nkrumah Street, Annandale, ECD; and 53-year-old pedestrian, Prahalad Sawh (deceased) of lot 167 Lusignan.

According to the motorcyclist, he was proceeding east along the road behind a minibus when he saw a “shadow” walking out from south to north across the road.

When the bus passed, he saw a pedestrian in front of him crossing, but he was already too close to avoid a collision.

Both Sawh and Lewis fell onto the road’s surface.

Lewis subsequently picked up his motorcycle and drove away.

The driver of the motorcar, PVV 854, told police that he was in the same lane but behind Lewis when the accident occurred.

He also told investigators that he could not avoid running over Sawh.

The police and ambulance were summoned and the pedestrian was examined by a doctor who pronounced him dead on the scene. The body was escorted to the Georgetown Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Notice of intended prosecution was served on the driver of the motorcar who remains in custody assisting with the investigation. A breathalyzer test found no trace of alcohol in his breath.

Meanwhile, Lewis was later taken to the Balwant Singh Hospital to seek medical attention where he was located by the Police. He has since been transferred to the GPHC in a serious but stable condition and is under police guard.
