The Regional Democratic Council of Demerara-Mahaica Region (Region #4) at its  statutory meeting today passed a motion of No-Confidence in the Clerk of Council and Regional Executive Officer (REO) Donald Gajraj.

According to the council’s resolution, the Clerk refused to implement multiple directives, motions, and decisions passed by the Regional Democratic Council, the duly elected governing body of the Demerara/Mahaica Region (Region #4).

In addition, the Clerk is accused by the Council of defiantly refusing to arrange Regional
Administrative Committee meetings as directed by the Council. In addition, the Clerk of Council is alleged to have willfully refused to schedule a meeting of the Senior Administrative Officers of the Council every Monday.

The motion also outlined that the Clerk of Council willfully refuses to submit requests for virements and programme changes to the Regional Finance Committee as directed by council. It is further alleged that the Clerk of Council refuses to present detailed financial reports of Agency 74 in accordance with council directives.

“The Clerk of Council refuses to send the Bill of Quantities, Contract Copies, and Weekly Progress Reports to the Works Committee as directed by Council. AND WHEREAS, the Clerk of Council approves payments to contractors without Works Committee review,” the motion outlined.

Yesterday, Region Four Chairman, Daniel Seeram reiterated his call for Gajraj’s removal from his post as he failed to be forthcoming about the details of various projects.

In fact, Seeram said he was considering legal action in an effort to compel the REO to submit several requested documents to the regional office. During a press conference yesterday, the Chairman outlined a plethora of allegations, all of which suggest that the REO might be involved in “blatant corruption”.
