The mother of a newborn that was abandoned near a canal in Recess Mahaicony is now being sought by police and the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA). The infant, assumed to be a few days old, was found and rescued by farmers in the district.

A source close to the search told Guyana Standard that the child might not have been born at a hospital in the district. The source said that both the Guyana Police and the CPA are working together to locate the mother of the child.

The team will be spending the remainder of today and tomorrow, questioning several persons in the surrounding communities with the hopes learning what might have led to the child’s abandonment.

In addition, the team also made several inquiries at various health clinics in the area in an effort to trace the mother.

The source also said that the child was found with its umbilical cord and placenta still intact. The source said investigators suspect that the mother might have given birth to the child in the vicinity of where he was abandoned.

The Guyana Police Force in a statement today explained that the infant was examined by a team of doctors. The force said the child, after examination, appears to be in good health and remains in the care of the Mahaicony Public Hospital.

The newborn was discovered on Monday afternoon by a group of farmers in a gift bag stashed between a clump of bushes.

One of the farmers told detectives that he was alerted by the sounds of crying from a section of a highly vegetative area near the canal. He lamented that when he saw the infant, he quickly fell into an emotional state and thereafter alerted the other farmers.
