Following the breach of the sea dam in Diamond/Grove Village, East Bank Demerara (END) on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has established an emergency shelter for affected residents. The shelter is located at Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church, Lot 123 Grove Village. It is currently housing 30 households comprising of 25 children, aged between 5 to 18 years, and 17 adults.

In response to the disaster, the Civil Defence Commission conducted a need assessment of the affected residents and has been maintaining effective communication with representatives of the Diamond/Grove National Democratic Council to ensure that all members of the community receive proper care and attention. A total of 80 hampers, including 50 cleaning supplies and 30 food packages, were distributed to residents in need.

The emergency shelter is being monitored and manned by CDC staff. The commission also urged all residents in the affected areas to remain calm and continue to follow safety protocols as it works toward resolving the situation. It also encouraged anyone who needs assistance to reach out to their local authorities or the Civil Defence Commission.
