After nearly three years of delays and excuses, Minister within the Public Works Ministry, Deodat Indar has called for an $87M concrete road project in Mahdia to be terminated. The project, which was managed by K&P Project Management, has been delayed repeatedly due to factors such as poor weather patterns, stone shortages, and equipment malfunctions. Minister Indar cited the project’s extended September 2022 deadline and structural issues in the completed portion of the road as reasons for its termination.

“This is no longer a project with K&P and the Government of Guyana. I am instructing the Permanent Secretary to cancel it,” Minister Indar announced during an inspection of the thoroughfare.

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill MP had previously given K&P Project Management a one-month extension to complete the 500-meter road, which was contracted for delivery within six months in 2020. As of June 2022, only 45 percent of the work had been completed.

During his inspection of the project in June, Minister Edghill expressed dissatisfaction with the rate of implementation and warned the contractor of the consequences for further delays.

Mahdia is a hub for coast landers seeking employment in the mining industry and has a population of 4,200 who rely on mining and farming for their livelihoods. The massive delay in the road project has caused significant socio-economic hardships for the town’s residents. (Phots extracted, modified from Minister Indar’s Facebook page)
