A momentous transformation is on the horizon for the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) as it is poised to become a distinguished Centre of Excellence under the guidance of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). This development was disclosed today by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during the opening ceremony of the Agri-Food Investment Forum and Expo 2023 at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre (ACCC).

There, President Ali said the initiative marked one of the successes of his recent trip to Costa Rica. He said authorities from both States agreed that a Centre of Excellence would aid tremendously in empowering the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) youth to become pivotal architects in the region’s agricultural development.

“IICA and the Government of Guyana have therefore agreed that we will develop a Center of Excellence for our young people in the field of agriculture here and across the region. The Guyana School of Agriculture will be transformed into the IICA Guyana Center of Excellence for studies in the field of Agriculture focusing on innovation and resilience,” the Head of State said.

Dr. Ali said this transformative initiative is a testament to Guyana’s forward-thinking approach, heralding a new era of agricultural education that aligns seamlessly with contemporary demands and global best practices. He believes it stands as a promise of a future where the youth are equipped, inspired, and ready to cultivate a legacy of excellence in the field of agriculture.

Founded in 1963 by the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan, GSA has been an enduring pillar in agricultural education, fostering generations of professionals and experts. Transitioning from its roots as a state corporation and evolving through times, it has cultivated a rich legacy offering robust diploma and certificate courses.
