Foreign Affairs Minister, Hugh Todd, in an exclusive conversation with Guyana Standard, confirmed that local authorities are still awaiting Venezuela’s response regarding the confirmation of Dr. Van West Charles as the country’s Ambassador.

Significantly, Venezuelan authorities received official communication about Guyana’s nominee on September 7. Minister Todd contextualized the timeline, stating, “It’s been about eight weeks since Venezuela was informed. However, traditionally, it can take upwards of 12 weeks. Each nation must perform its due diligence and subsequently relay its agreement through established diplomatic channels.”

The selection of Dr. Charles, a former member of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R), holds symbolic weight. Minister Todd underscored the decision as a testament to the PPP government’s unwavering pledge to inclusivity. He further stressed the administration’s policy, emphasizing that roles are conferred based on an individual’s merit and not swayed by political ties.

The appointment of Dr. Charles comes at a time of increasing aggressive and passive-aggressive tactics from Venezuela. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela recently voiced its vehement objections to Guyana’s inaugural auction of oil blocks. In a communication that raised eyebrows, the Venezuelan government insinuated taking “all necessary measures” to hinder Guyana-licensed activities in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Compounding concerns, recent videos and reports have spotlighted apparent Venezuelan military maneuvers close to Guyana’s border in Eteringbang, Cuyuni, Region Seven.

While awaiting Venezuela’s decision, Minister Todd disclosed that President Dr. Irfaan Ali is actively pursuing diplomatic appointments with pivotal global players like Brazil, India, and the UAE. “We’ve initiated the selection process. Upon its conclusion, nominee names will be forwarded to the pertinent nations for their nod,” Minister Todd concluded.
