Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo recently underscored the need for the University of Guyana (UG) to enhance its degree programmes amid substantial government investment, inclusive of an initiative to provide free education.
The Vice President emphasized the importance of quality in degree programmes, calling for a comprehensive review to ensure taxpayer resources contribute to solid leadership and internationally recognized standards.
Addressing queries regarding comparable salaries for UG lecturers, Jagdeo made a clear distinction between the structures of UG and the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL). He argued for a nuanced discussion beyond salary considerations, acknowledging that there are a number of factors influencing the quality of education at UG.
“When you look at quality…I think that we need to return to the focus on the quality of the degree [programmes] and the quality of the tuition, and if it necessitates higher remuneration to improve quality, then we’ll have to do it,” he said
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) had pledged free education at UG in its 2020 Manifesto Promise. President Dr Irfaan Ali recently outlined plans for phased implementation, beginning with addressing pre-existing loans. At his presentation of the 2024 Budget, Finance Minister, Dr.Ashni Singh disclosed the initiation of the first phase, involving the elimination of outstanding loans for UG graduates. However, this write-off is conditional upon graduates demonstrating proof of employment for a specified period.
Vice President Jagdeo acknowledged the necessity for careful consideration in rolling out this measure, recognizing its selective impact. He pointed out the multifaceted nature of discussions about quality education, emphasizing a return to focusing on the quality of degree programmes and tuition. Jagdeo also expressed concern over the potential shift to mainly online classes, post-COVID, highlighting the importance of maintaining a campus experience.
As the government commits to fulfilling its promise of free UG education, Vice President Jagdeo stressed the need for a balanced approach, considering the varied impacts on different individuals. This phased initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance educational opportunities while ensuring fiscal responsibility.
