A woman who attempted to smuggle cannabis to a prisoner in the Lusignan Prison has been handed over to the police.

Patrica Blackman of 135 King Edward’s Street, Alboystown, Georgetown was arrested on Monday morning after she was found with a quantity of cannabis while at the prison on the East Coast of Demerara. Authorities found the drugs, amounting to 15 grams, during a thorough search of her belongings upon arrival.

The marijuana was cleverly concealed inside plastic straws, which were then placed in several tubes of toothpaste.

The woman was detained and the police are now investigating her alleged involvement in marijuana smuggling.

Meanwhile, the GPS is calling on civilians to recognise the dangers at which they place themselves, society, inmates, and officers by engaging in the trade of contraband within the walls of the prison. The GPS also noted that smuggling contraband into a correctional facility is an offence that has serious consequences.

The woman remains in custody, pending charges.
