The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has denied affiliation with the man who performed a “ritual” outside the Education Ministry on Thursday.

The man was draped in an opposition, A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance logo flag. He ventured to the ministry’s entrance, where he poured a substance before kneeling and began hitting the ground with an object.

GTU’s President, Mark Lyte, during a livestream, said that the union is not affiliated with the individual.

“The Guyana Teachers’ Union, in no way, supports any act that is superstitious, (and) any act that is vulgar…,” he said. He added that information received by the union suggests that the individual is of “unsound mind”.

The President added that whether the person was “set up” to carry out that act, or did it of his own free will, will be probed by the GTU.

The union has also issued a statement on the matter. See below:

In response to recent events, we unequivocally distance ourself from the actions of an individual not affiliated with our organization. We want to make it clear that the behavior portrayed is entirely inconsistent with our values.

GTU is committed to fostering a community of integrity, respect, and inclusion. We have no connection to the individual’s actions, and we condemn any behavior that goes against the principles we uphold.

With the footage that was presented it clearly shows that the individual didn’t pose any threat since the well alerted Police Officers stood by as the unidentified person carried out their actions.

Our focus remains on promoting a positive environment that reflects the true spirit of GTU. We appreciate the understanding of our community as we navigate through this situation with transparency and dedication.

Teachers, let’s not allow the enemy to cause confusion within our camp. Solidarity Forever!
