A security officer and a businessman from Bartica, Region Seven, have been taken into custody over the theft of solar panels from Two Miles Primary School. The incident is alleged to have occurred between Friday, April 19, and Monday, April 22, 2024.

Reportedly, four Merisolar solar panels, valued at GYD$260,000 and belonging to the Government of Guyana, were taken from the school premises. These panels were part of recent repairs, with the old ones temporarily stored under the school’s stairway.

The theft came to light on Monday morning when Melanie Gardener, the school’s Canteen Manager, noticed the absence of four panels while cleaning the area. She reported the matter to the Head Teacher and the authorities were immediately notified.

Following an investigation, police visited the residence of a local businessman in Bartica, who cooperated with the authorities. Subsequently, two stolen panels were recovered from the businessman’s vehicle, and two more were found on the roof of his building.

Both the security guard and the businessman have been arrested, informed of the charges against them, and are currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing.
