Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo says if U.S.-based Guyanese activist Melissa Atwell, also known as “Melly Mel,” is sent back to Guyana, she will be welcomed.
His comment comes as speculation swirls over whether Atwell had been arrested. Reports indicate that she was taken into custody and questioned by U.S. Homeland Security agents this morning.
According to reports, U.S. agents escorted Atwell from her home to a New York office, where she was questioned about her online activism, alleged complaints filed against her by the Government of Guyana, and other matters.
When asked to comment, Jagdeo, at a press conference this afternoon, said he’s not aware of any government agency being notified of Atwell’s arrest. However, he noted that if any information is to be shared, it would be handled by local law enforcement agencies.
“We have made our position clear on this matter, but we don’t obsess over Ms. Atwell every day,” the official remarked, adding that there are individuals “far more extreme” than her, citing Rickford Burke as an example.
The official also noted uncertainty regarding Atwell’s immigration status in the U.S., stating, “I don’t know whether she is a permanent resident or a citizen.”
However, he maintained that Atwell is Guyanese and if she is required to return to Guyana, she would be welcomed back.
Welcome back a snake? More ass-kissing by Fagdeo.
