Police are investigating an incident that occurred today at about 00:30hrs on the Stanleytown Public Road in New Amsterdam, Berbice, which resulted in the death of 25-year-old Jamal Hughes, a resident of Glasgow Village, East Berbice.
The incident involved a motorcycle, CP 2700, which was driven by Jamal Hughes, along with pillion rider, Marashia Dehart, a 24-year-old of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, and an unbranded cow.
Initial investigations revealed that Hughes and Dehart were proceeding south along the aforementioned road on the motorcycle, allegedly at a fast rate, when the cycle collided with the cow, which was crossing from east to west.
As a result, they both fell onto the road’s surface, receiving injuries about their bodies. They were picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Hughes was subsequently treated for injuries to his head and other parts of his body but succumbed to his injuries at about 01:55hrs. The pillion rider was also treated for minor injuries about her body and later sent her away.
Hughes’ body is at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
