On Wednesday morning, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, along with a team from the Ministry of Agriculture, visited President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s One Guyana Shadehouse in Tiger Bay, where he met with six single mothers from the community who are currently engaged in cultivation activities at the facility and will soon benefit from support to establish their own shadehouses.

Minister Mustapha explained that the Ministry of Agriculture, through the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), will work closely with the women to develop additional shadehouses that will allow them to generate supplementary income through agricultural production. He told the women that they will continue to receive technical training and practical experience at the existing One Guyana Shadehouse to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage their own operations. He also noted that each shadehouse has the potential to generate an additional monthly income of between $200,000 and $240,000 for the beneficiaries.

The shadehouses will focus on the cultivation of leafy vegetables and herbs, including celery, with produce targeted for local markets. The initiative forms part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to creating economic opportunities, empowering women, and promoting sustainable agriculture within communities.
