A 23-year-old man is expected to appear before the Leonora Magistrate’s Court today in connection with the murder of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed and the attempted murder of a 72-year-old woman at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo.
Police in Regional Division Three had launched an investigation following the incident, which occurred at about 04:45hrs on June 5 at Phase Three, Zeelugt New Housing Scheme.
According to investigators, the child lived with relatives. At around 05:05hrs, a relative visited the residence and discovered the elderly woman injured and the child motionless inside the house.
The pensioner was rushed to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment. Police said her condition was listed as stable.
Ranks who responded to the scene conducted investigations and examined the child’s body, where injuries were observed. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered and taken into police custody.
The child was transported to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
