Director General Nazrul Hussain stated that the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is actively monitoring the flooding in Kwakwani, Region 10. This response came as Guyana Standard asked about the CDC sending food supplies and other essentials to the people in the affected communities.

It has been reported that many houses and businesses have been inundated by water that keep rising. Officials from the region have been quoted saying that they do not have capacity to supply what is needed to those affected. But the only response from CDC is that the situation is being monitored.

On Tuesday evening, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) councillor, Mark Goring in a Facebook post highlighted that residents of Lauder’s Ville were surrounded by flood waters as the water levels continue to rise and affect more communities.

“We are calling on the Civil Defence Commission, regional authorities, and disaster response agencies to deploy to Lauder’s Ville without del ay. Assessment teams, boats, and relief supplies must be mobilized to assist residents who are now cut off by rising waters.”

In an interview with the Guyana Standard on Tuesday, Dominique Blair, an A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) councillor, explained that the flood waters have not receded and the situation in Kwakwani remains critical. A team was mobilized and would be visiting the residents on Wednesday to distribute relief packages.

On Monday, the councillors of Region 10 Regional Democratic Council extended a call to the government, specifically the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), to address the urgent situation faced by residents of Kwakwani who have been affected by heavy flooding that started over the weekend.

The affected communities are Waterfront, Lamp Island, Jeep Landing, Lauder’s Ville, and Mackenzie Market. He stated that businesses and households continue to experience flooding, and water levels are still rising rapidly.
