At Monday’s El Niño Stakeholders’ Forum, Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, brought together farmers, technical agencies, private-sector representatives, development partners and other key stakeholders to strengthen Guyana’s preparedness for the ongoing El Niño conditions.
With reduced rainfall and higher temperatures already being experienced in parts of the country, the discussions focused on practical measures to safeguard agricultural production, including strengthening water management and irrigation, improving access to timely climate information, and promoting climate-smart agricultural practices.
Minister Mustapha emphasised that preparedness cannot remain on paper—it must translate into practical action on the ground to support farmers and protect production.
Importantly, the Minister reassured farmers that the objective is not to create panic, but to prepare, plan and act early.
