Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Wednesday handed over a range of agricultural inputs and equipment to farmers in the Moruca Sub-District, Region One, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen agricultural production and support farming communities.
The items distributed included small farming tools such as cutlasses, files, garden hoes and spades, as well as mist blowers, brush cutters, chainsaws, fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, bumba pumps, spray cans, shadehouse plastic and shade mesh. Two all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) were also handed over to support agricultural activities in the area.
During his engagement with farmers, Minister Mustapha emphasized the need to increase and expand agricultural production while encouraging greater participation by women and young people in the sector.
He also announced that through the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), the Ministry of Agriculture will establish similar shadehouse operations for women’s groups in Moruca to support agricultural development and create new opportunities for income generation.
The minister highlighted the growing opportunities within the agriculture sector, noting that increased production, diversification and value-added activities can help create jobs, generate income and stimulate economic growth within communities.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to farmers, Minister Mustapha said the administration will continue providing the tools, technical support and resources needed to help farmers expand their operations, improve productivity and capitalize on emerging opportunities in Guyana’s rapidly developing agriculture sector.
Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek and other regional officials were also present at the event.
